13. Information & Memory

Information, in the framework we’ve been shaping, is not an abstract entity stored somewhere outside of reality—it is simply what persists through the unfolding of time. If time itself is the process of selecting stable patterns from an infinite field of possibilities, then information is the trace of what survives that selection. It is not encoded in a separate layer; it is the continuation of structure. A pattern that holds its form across moments carries information precisely because it has not collapsed. What we call “data,” “signals,” or “meaning” are all different ways of recognizing this persistence within the flow of interactions.

This also reshapes the idea of memory. There is no need for an external storage system where reality keeps records of the past. Instead, reality “remembers” by continuing patterns forward. A memory is not a static snapshot preserved somewhere—it is a structure that has maintained enough coherence to influence what comes next. In a brain, this appears as neural patterns that can be reactivated; in physics, as states that evolve consistently; in relationships, as behaviors that repeat and reinforce. Across all levels, memory is the same phenomenon: the past is not stored separately, it is embedded in the present as the continuation of what has endured.

From this, identity itself becomes a question of persistence. A thing is not defined by a fixed essence, but by the continuity of its pattern through time. You are not the exact same configuration you were moments ago, yet something persists—enough coherence to be recognized as “you.” This persistence is what we call identity. It is not absolute or unchanging; it is dynamic, maintained through ongoing interaction with the field of potential. Information, memory, and identity are therefore not separate concepts, but different views of the same process: patterns that survive the filtering of time, carrying forward the imprint of what has been into what can still become.
